Big Impact at a Small Cost

We are helping many thousands of Venezuelans on a very modest budget. Many of our supporters are amazed at what is being done with such small amounts of money. It’s about being very smart – and very passionate – about every dollar that we spend. It’s also about wisely investing in human beings first!

93+% directly into the field

Over the past fifteen years, an average of over 93% of every dollar has gone directly into the field. In 2014, it was almost 95% and in 2015, we reached 96+% !!! Our goal is to exceed 95% each year.

Here’s how:

All Foundation Officers and Board Members are 100% volunteer – they receive no compensation of any kind.
We do not spend money creating new systems or investing in costly new infrastructure – we work to improve existing infrastructure that is already in place in Venezuela.
Our broad network of partners – both public and private – focus on service delivery using a wonderful team of Venezuelan medical, educational, and social services professionals.
We receive in-country support from Venezuelan sources, including in-kind contributions of infrastructure, equipment, supplies, and staff.
Favorable exchange rates help us do a lot with a little.

What Your Support Can Do:

Community and Families
Small sums can help to solve a myriad of individual and practical problems that permit the rural community as a whole to flourish.  In many cases, we directly know the extended families that we serve.

$50 can lift a family through a crisis and allow a child to stay in school

$100 can bring piped water or electricity to a home

Family Planning and Public Health
Our program reaches three rural counties and empowers the lives of thousands of women and their families every year.

$150 helps a family resolve a medical problem.
This past year we expanded our surgery program to include a wider range of procedures for families who can no longer count on the collapsing public health system during the current socio-economic crisis here in Venezuela. Often a single and relatively simple intervention can make an enormous difference in the lives of individuals and tangibly lift their families into a better and more self-reliant mode. We have helped with biopsies, partial mastectomies, inguinal hernias, cesarean sections and more, at the private clinics we work with. Each surgery costs between $120 and $200 total, thanks to the collaboration of the doctors and the clinic. We work out financing with the low-income patients, who can usually pay back up to half of this in local currency over time, helping the Foundation's in-country cash flow.

$200 helps 400 adolescents to become knowledgeable about their sexuality
In 2015, we offered 80 educational workshops (320 hours) in reproductive health and family planning to a total of 1,898 participants. Because we work directly with State institutions, each workshop costs less than $.50 USD per participant. The self-awareness is, of course, priceless.

$400 provides family planning for up to 40 women for one year
We are able to keep our costs low by using Venezuela’s existing public health infrastructure, doing social marketing in the private sector, and receiving contraceptives and other supplies at a very low cost. Still, there are thousands more women seeking this assistance than we can afford to help right now.

$1500 offers ten mature families a permanent way to control their fertility
Each laparoscopic surgical sterilization (tubal ligation) costs only $150 USD through the combined generous support of the private sector, patient co-pays and other assistance. Our waiting list is always too long for what has consistently been the most popular and in-demand service we offer.

Education and Teachers
We currently offer financial and logistical support to 60 rural students in high school and a gratifying 20 students who, with our support, are continuing their studies at the college level.  But there are several hundred more students in our rural area alone, who need our help.

$200 supports one high school scholarship student for one school year
Each scholarship student receives carefully orchestrated assistance. Many more students apply for our help than we can respond to on our current budget.

$300 supports professional development for one grade or high school teacher for one school year.
Rural teachers often work in isolated semi-literate local cultures with little peer feedback. We facilitate opportunities to improve their skills at nearby urban educational institutions.

$500 supports one college scholarship student for one academic year.
Each year, more of our low income rural students graduate from high school and seek higher education, and we continue to support them.

$1000 will help us develop our remote education center two hours from the nearest road.
Monthly staffing for this rural Community Center costs about $100 and educational materials cost another $100. We would like to improve our library and add more computers.

Dreaming together, we can transform not just one community, but many communities.
